John W. Scherer
Biography

John W. Scherer, CEO & Founder of Video Professor, revolutionized the way people learn when he created the first self-paced computer tutorials on videotape in 1987. Those first lessons bred Video Professor, the privately-owned success story that today provides tutorials on CD as well as online.

When John W. Scherer first labeled himself the “Video Professor,” little did he know that his company would teach over eight million people how to use various computer applications. At the time, John W. Scherer owned a small computer-manufacturing business that sold computers to local dealers. It was through that business that John W. Scherer realized the need for educational products to teach people how to use computers.

The self-proclaimed “Video Professor” created a method for teaching computer skills on videotape. That same "What-You-See-Is-What-You-Do" method still applies to all Video Professor CD and online tutorials.

Video Professor offers self-paced tutorials with more than 50 titles covering more than 20 different applications. All of the tutorials are available on CD as well as streaming video accessible 24 hours a day at www.videoprofessor.com.

John W. Scherer has also been the poster child for Video Professor, appearing on billboards, in Internet ads, and on television commercials and infomercials. His face and his name have become synonymous with Video Professor, which is, in itself, a nationally recognized term.

To make sure the very first Video Professor infomercial was noticed back in 1991, John W. Scherer commissioned the help of Jeff Conaway of Grease and Taxi fame. Jeff Conaway made the first Video Professor infomercial an instant hit. A few years later, when John W. Scherer wanted to expand the number of titles available at Video Professor, Jeff Conaway again starred with John W. Scherer in a new infomercial. That infomercial brought calls from thousands of people across America who wanted to learn more about computers.

By 1996, advertising efforts at Video Professor grew to include television commercials, newspaper ads, and magazine ads. By this time, John W. Scherer also noticed an emerging need. To fill that need, Video Professor began offering the same tutorials on CD-ROM as well as videotape. Today, Video Professor continues to fill the needs of the customers it serves by providing tutorials online.

John W. Scherer built his business with a focus on impeccable customer service. This focus has steered the success of Video Professor. The company’s success has been rewarding, earning the company a spot on the Small Business Administration Wall of Fame, recognition by Jefferson County in Colorado for contributions to the county’s economic growth, and coveted Aurora Awards for video production for three consecutive years.

The success of Video Professor has also enabled John W. Scherer to give back to the communities that made him what he is today.

John W. Scherer funds college scholarships in honor of his parents for graduates of Naperville High School in Naperville, IL. He also funds an academic and a sports scholarship for his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Video Professor and John W. Scherer donate computer tutorials to community organizations and outreach programs, including the Chickasaw Nation Computer Literacy Project, the United States Peace Corps, a Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, and many others.
